Remember your Grandma telling you to not gulp down water after a meal? Or when she’d insist you to have small portions of everything cooked? Well, as far as Grandmas go, they are always right. As was Hippocrates btw, when he said, “Let food be thy medicine and medicine be thy food”.
Your body is an intricate and intelligent ecosystem that requires all the necessary building blocks of life in adequate amounts for its optimum growth and functioning. These ‘building blocks’ are essentially the Macros (proteins, carbohydrates, fats, fibres) and the Micros (vitamins + minerals). Generally speaking, a balanced diet should have ~40% fruits and vegetables, ~25% protein, ~25% fibre rich carbohydrates and ~10% of healthy fats. However, a healthy balanced diet is not standard for all. It varies for every individual according to their BMI, age, gender, lifestyle and even geographical location. And wait, we dare not forget to drink at least 6-7 glasses of water daily! Here’s a visual representation of what your daily diet should somewhat look like.
Nutrition is an aspect that you can take control of, unlike your genetics or certain external factors. It’d be bonkers to underestimate its importance in maintaining optimal health. But at the same time, we understand if you’re hesitant or confused as to how to take charge because of the constantly changing diet trends and the new ‘scientific’ concepts that seem to originate from out of nowhere.
